Moose Country Minute – October 25 2014

Play

Up in my neck of the woods, anyone with hunting licence and a tag is tromping through the bush or waking up in their hunt camp with either a hangover or a hankering.

The moose hunt has been on since Monday, and those with shotguns and rifles rather than crossbows have their sights on bagging Bullwinkle.

Now moose, as most folk know, are the Mr. Magoos of the animal kingdom. Although their have a tremendous sense of smell and hearing, they are in dire need of an optometrist.

They can’t see worth a damn.

A friend of mine posted a video on YouTube during this season’s bow hunt of a big cow moose within a lob ball’s toss of where he was standing, in  clear view if the moose had a good pair of spectacles.

Lucky for the moose, my friend and his hunting  companion did not have a cow tag or that moose was a good as dinner.

This year, hunters who have camps in Algonquin Park, which is just a few klicks up the road from Yours Truly, will likely experience what it is like to s shoot fish in a barrel.

Not once in my life have I ever driven through Algonquin Park from Whitney to Huntsville without seeing a moose — not that they could see me.
